A front moves off the top of the South Island this morning then onto the lower North Island this afternoon, winds strong from the north ahead of the front and tending more west to northwest behind the front.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy with the odd patchy light shower or drizzle patch possible then expect evening rain, breezy northwesterly winds change southwest later on.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy with the odd patchy shower then rain moves in after midday with heavy falls possible, rain clears overnight. Northwesterly winds change westerly in the evening.
Highs: 15-16

Eastern North Island

Thick high cloud with gusty northwesterly winds, especially in the afternoon. A few spells of rain spread from the west into the Wairarapa late afternoon and further north later in the evening.
Highs: 18-19

Wellington

The odd shower turns to rain in the morning, possibly heavy for a time in the afternoon. Strong northwesterly winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain possibly heavy then clearing during the afternoon, winds gusty perhaps strong from the northwest. Cloud breaks in the evening.
Highs: 15-17

Canterbury

Morning high cloud may bring a spot of rain, sun breaking through in the afternoon as breezy northeasterly winds tend northwest. Areas of rain may spread into the foothills at times throughout the day till evening.
Highs: 17-18

West Coast

Areas of rain possibly heavy at first then gradually easing during the day, rain eases to showers in the evening which clear overnight. Breezy northwesterly winds.
High: 13

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy with scattered rain for Southland and Central Otago, dry for coastal Otago but expect high cloud. Rain more persistent about inland areas. Northwesterly winds change southwest late afternoon which finally pushes showers into coastal Otago then areas of precipitation clearing later in the evening or overnight.
Highs: 8-12
