Thursday’s national forecast – Unstable North Island

An unstable trough moves over the upper North Island this afternoon bringing thunderstorms and a chance of hail, A cold front pushes north of the South Island this afternoon and evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, heavy with thunderstorms and possible hail from late morning, easing evening. Northwesterlies change fresh southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 14 – 16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy with the odd shower, showers beef up from late morning Taranaki northwards then easing evening. Overnight rain spills over into Manawatu from the east. Northwesterlies tend westerly in the afternoon and freshen.
Highs: 10 – 15

Eastern North Island

Sunny spells with northwest winds, a few showers spill over from the west in the afternoon for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. A few showers for Wairarapa later in the evening then turning to rain, rain pushes a little further northwards overnight with southwesterlies.
Highs: 17 – 20

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, sun may break through late afternoon, chance of a shower. Rain for a time overnight as southerlies freshen.
Highs: 14 – 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Any morning showers clear Marlborough then afternoon sun breaks through, showers again later in the evening as southwesterlies freshen. Nelson has mostly sunny weather with westerlies.
Highs: 14 – 17

Canterbury

Morning showers Banks Peninsula northwards clear, sun and high cloud otherwise. Late afternoon southwesterlies freshen for South Canterbury, reaching North Canterbury in the evening bringing rain, clearing overnight.
Highs: 12 – 15

West Coast

Morning sun possible with high cloud, showers for Fiordland spread northwards during the afternoon as southwesterlies freshen. Conditions clear up at night for a time, overnight rain moves into Fiordland.
Highs: 12 – 14

Southland & Otago
Dry with high cloud, late morning southwesterlies freshen for Southland bringing showers, moving into Otago during the afternoon, clearing overnight. Snow may lower to 700m in the evening before clearing.
Highs: 11 – 16
