Thursday’s national forecast – Unsettled WSW airflow

A front over the North Island this morning pushes out to the east leaving an unstable westerly airflow in its wake, the South Island has southwesterlies with a chance of instability in the skies too.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain with heavy falls then easing to showers, showers may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail from afternoon. Fresh westerlies tend a little more southwest later in the day.
Highs: 18-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Strong west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 12-18

Eastern North Island

Morning scattered rain then sunny areas increase with northwesterly winds, further spits may spread from the west late afternoon onwards. Later in the evening gusty southwesterlies develop about Wairarapa bringing rain.
Highs: 19-24

Wellington

Partly cloudy, a few showers especially in the north, winds strong from the northwest. Later in the evening showers turn to widespread rain as winds change to the south, thunderstorms and hail may move in.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Some morning sun, showers develop in the afternoon, drying out in the evening for Nelson. West to northwesterly winds change to the southwest late afternoon.
Highs: 18-20

Canterbury

A dry morning with some sun, showers develop in the afternoon as northwesterlies change to the south. Showers may become heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing at night.
Highs: 17-21

West Coast

Rain, a chance of thunderstorms and hail. Gusty northwesterlies change southwest late afternoon.
Highs: 13-14

Southland & Otago
Rain eases to showers during the afternoon, southwesterly winds freshen then easing overnight.
Highs: 13-18
