A low pressure system centered to the northwest of the North Island brings rain and a few heavy falls, the South Island has a southerly airflow with showers moving north in the east, dry in the west.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain with heavy falls, easing this morning Auckland northwards as breezy northeasterlies tend a little more to the north. In the afternoon Auckland northwards may see isolated heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms form. Winds change to the south or southeast overnight.
Highs: 16-18
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain, possibly heavy from afternoon then easing in the evening. Strengthening southeasterly winds, gales about the coast.
Highs: 10-14
Eastern North Island
Rain, becoming heavy in the morning, easing in the evening for Gisborne. South to southeasterly winds strengthen from midday although for Gisborne winds remain light.
Highs: 10-14
Wellington
Showers, some rain in the north. Strong southeasterly winds, rising to gale force by midday through Cook Strait.
Highs: 9-11
Marlborough & Nelson
Cloudy areas, a few showers develop about Marlborough from afternoon, strengthening southeasterly winds. Gales about the Sounds and Golden Bay.
Highs: 10-13
Canterbury
A frosty start and some sun then cloud develops with light winds tending to the south. A light shower or two from afternoon especially inland, spreading to the coast by evening. There could be a few light snow flurries to 500m.
Highs: 8-12
West Coast
Mostly sunny, some high cloud for North Westland. Southeasterlies pick up in the afternoon.
Highs: 13-15
Southland & Otago
Showers for Southland push into Otago by midday with southerly winds, showers clear in the evening for Southland. Light snow flurries to 400m.
Highs: 8-10
