Thursday’s national forecast – Southerlies, West Coast place to be

A southerly airflow lies over New Zealand today, this starts to ease for the South Island especially later as an anticyclone nudges in from the Tasman Sea.

North Island

Rain or showers today for many, rain Taranaki southwards in the west starts to clear from this afternoon with sun breaking through. Once overnight arrives showers will only be remaining along the eastern coastal fringe (Wairarapa to East Cape) and about Coromandel, Auckland and some parts of Northland. Southerlies strong to gale about some coastal parts this morning then gradually backing off from this afternoon.

South Island

Mostly sunny along the West Coast with light winds, cloud thickens north of about Westport this evening bringing the odd shower. Nelson and Marlborough are mostly sunny then some cloud develops from afternoon. Along the east coast expect some cloud and a few showers, mainly areas will remain dry. Southland and Central Otago has morning cloud break to sun. Winds from the south or southwest dying out this evening. Cool temperatures overnight for inland areas especially Southland / Otago.
