Thursday’s national forecast – Lows split apart

A complex low pressure system splits in two today, one low centre moves away to the east while the other retreats a little into the Tasman. Between the two a south to southeasterly airflow spreads northwards, moving around a ridge of high pressure.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning low cloud or fog possible then a mix of sun and cloud, a few isolated showers, one or two may become heavy in the afternoon with thunder. Light winds.
Highs: 21-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A mix of sun and cloud, light winds tend south to southeast in the afternoon. Chance of a shower or two otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island

Sunny spells, cloud increases from afternoon. A few showers possible mainly later in the day. Southerly winds.
Highs: 20-23

Wellington

A few morning spits of rain, partly cloudy skies with southerly winds.
Highs: 17-19

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain, afternoon sunny spells possible. South to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-18

Canterbury

Rain, heavy falls possible, mainly inland then easing at night. Southeasterly winds, tending more to the south north of Banks Peninsula.
Highs: 14-17

West Coast

Cloudy with some rain, easing to showers for Buller in the afternoon, clearing evening, easing and clearing overnight further south. Fiordland is dry but there could be a few showers later in the day. Easterly quarter winds.
Highs: 19-20

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy with the odd spit or shower for Southland, dry areas lengthening from afternoon. Otago has showers inland, rain nearer the coast and in the north. Easterly winds, a little gusty about the coast.
Highs: 14-16
