A ridge lies over most of the country today with clear skies in the west and north of the South Island, some cloud at times elsewhere especially in the far south. For the North Island expect plenty of high cloud with general cloudy areas also, rain or showers affects areas north of Auckland and along the east coast for the most part.

Northland
Rain from early morning with brisk southeasterlies, a possible heavy fall about the far north of Northland. Rain easing to showers in the evening as winds tend more southerly then clearing at night.
High: 13-14

Auckland
Cloudy skies with southeasterly winds picking up from morning becoming breezy in the afternoon. There is the chance of a shower at times in northern parts of Auckland, and a high risk about Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel particularly in the east. Any showery weather clearing later in the evening.
High: 14-15

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Plenty of high cloud, thick in places with southeasterly breezes. Some cloud builds about the Central North Island south of Lake Taupo later in the evening and there may be a brief shower there overnight.
Highs: 10-13

Eastern North Island
Mostly cloudy skies with southerly breezes picking up from late afternoon, the odd shower at times about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne then at night about Wairarapa also.
High: 11-12

Western North Island
Sunny with some high cloud, easterly winds tend more southeast during the afternoon. Some cloud builds later in the evening and there is the low risk of a shower about areas south of Taranaki overnight as winds tend more southerly.
Highs: 10-12

Wellington
Cloudy spells with southerly breezes, picking up a little from midday. There may be a shower later at night.
Highs: 10-11

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny weather although there may be some morning cloud, southerly breezes. In the evening some cloud builds about inland southern Marlborough and there could be a shower or two during this time.
Highs: 10-12

Canterbury
Sunny spells and some cloud with southwest breezes, there may be a brief coastal shower in the evening especially about Banks Peninsula and the Kaikoura Ranges area.
Highs: 8-10

West Coast
Mostly sunny with light winds.
High: 11-12

Southland & Otago
Cloudy periods about Southland with southwest breezes, the odd shower at times clearing evening. Sunny spells and some cloud about Central Otago, light southerly winds and the low risk of a brief spit now and then mainly in southern areas of the district. Sunny and cloudy spells for coastal Otago with west to southwest winds.
