A westerly quarter airflow lies over New Zealand today, moving around a large high centred to the northwest of the North Island. Meanwhile a front pushes northwards over the South Island during the day, weakening as it moves north.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells, cloud about the Waikato may be thicker. West to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas, the odd light shower possible otherwise mainly dry. West to northwesterly winds, gusty about the south Taranaki and Kapiti coastlines.
Highs: 14

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with increasing high cloud. West to northwesterly winds, gusty about the Wairarapa.
Highs: 18-22

Wellington
Cloudy areas with gusty north to northwesterly winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and some high cloud, northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-21

Canterbury
Sunny areas and some high cloud, northwesterly winds gusty at times for inland areas.
Highs: 19-21

West Coast
Cloudy with patchy light rain, heavy rain moves through Fiordland in the morning then easing a little and pushing northwards during the afternoon / evening. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-14

Southland & Otago
Morning rain (mainly inland and about Southland) clears then expect mostly sunny weather with west to northwest winds.
Highs: 16-19
