A northwesterly airflow lies over the country today strong over the South Island and parts of the lower North Island, rain for the west of the South Island and mainly dry out east. Showers however moving into Otago may bring thunderstorms this afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

A mostly sunny day with a few clouds mainly afternoon, chance of some fog to start about the Waikato. Light northerly quarter winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas with the odd shower possible, mainly later in the day. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-17
 
Eastern North Island
A mainly sunny day with some high cloud gradually increasing from the south during the afternoon, the odd spot of rain may spread into the Wairarapa in the afternoon and further north in the evening. Winds from the northwest.

Wellington
Brisk Nor’Westers and fairly cloudy, the odd shower about mainly afternoon onwards.

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy with a few spells of rain about Nelson from morning then clearing by evening, Marlborough sees the odd spot mainly afternoon. Winds breezy to brisk from the northwest.

Canterbury
High cloud develops this morning, chance spot of rain around midday then cloud breaks away this afternoon, breezy NW winds. Later in the evening a southwest change may brush coastal areas with the chance of a shower.

West Coast
Cloudy with areas of rain, easing in the evening as breezy northwesterly winds change southwest.

Southland & Otago
Thick high cloud with spots of rain and northerly winds, showers late afternoon or evening with possible thunderstorms about coastal Otago as winds change southwest.
