A northeasterly airflow lies over the country today as a high pressure system moves away out to the east, they never last to long these days. Later on a warm front pushes in from the Tasman ahead of a low pressure system.

So to start we will have areas of high cloud increasing across the country today, the North Island will have a fair amount of mid level cloud with a few showers in the northeast (Northland through to Bay Of Plenty). Rain develops about Northland this evening then elsewhere in the west before pushing east overnight.

The South Island has areas of mid level cloud in the east but these will break away, rain arrives for the top of the South Island later this evening then progressively spreads elsewhere overnight apart from in the southeast (Southland / Otago).

Northeasterlies will freshen for the upper North Island and along the east coast of the South Island. Temperatures are warmest about the western / upper North Island and in the far south reaching into the mid to late twenties.
