Thunderstorms, hail, possible tornadoes head east

WeatherWatch.co.nz is warning more hailstorms, waterspouts, tornadoes and thunderstorms are possible across two parts of the country today.

A band of active thunderstorms is moving towards the Whakatane and eastern Bay of Plenty region.  Another band of thunderstorms is moving from King Country to Central Plateau.

WeatherWatch.co.nz advises people to remain indoors if they hear thunder neaby and turn off non-essential electronics such as computers until the thunderstorms have passed.  

Severe weather may arrive in Whakatane and other eastern regions of the BOP and western regions of East Cape within “a few minutes to an hour”.

The Centre also says if you see a tornado to get indoors and find a small room, away from windows, on the sheltered side of the house.   While not widespread isolated tornadoes are part of this active front moving across the Bay of Plenty.

Boaties are also advised to be aware of thunderstorms and waterspouts around the entire Bay of Plenty marine area.
