Thunderstorm risk shifts to West Coast

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Yesterday’s dramatic thunderstorms over Taupo and Rotorua aren’t expected to repeat themselves today says WeatherWatch.co.nz – but an incoming front along the West Coast could trigger some thunderstorm activity later today and tonight.

The North Island thunderstorms yesterday cut power to parts of Rotorua and caused white out conditions in some areas due to heavy hail as cloud tops climbed as high as overhead passenger jets.

The incoming front today is expected to trigger thunderstorms along the South Island’s West Coast this afternoon and evening.  WeatherWatch.co.nz says they will be far more isolated and not severe like yesterday’s ones.

It’s possible a few areas of thunder could make it into Taranaki overnight but WeatherWatch.co.nz rates the chances as “low” at this stage.
