Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
NORTHEAST AIRFLOW BRINGS SHOWERS TO THE NORTH
This weekend we have an east to northeasterly airflow over the country, expect some cloud for the eastern and upper North Island and occasional showers moving through at times.
From Sunday afternoon rain starts to move into northern Northland.
Winds for the upper North Island are going to be quite blustery from the east, strong for coastal parts.
RAINFALL OUTLOOK
The general consensus for the next seven days is it’ll be drier in the east, wetter in the west than could normally be expected at this time of year in regards to rainfall.
Drier weather in the east is mainly the result of higher pressure in the Pacific meanwhile lower pressure in the Tasman Sea brings fronts or trough to western regions.
The precipitation percentage of normal map below shows red (less rainfall expected than the statistical average), blue (more rainfall expected than the statistical average) and white (average amount of rainfall). The more intense the colour the more either scenario is true.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A high is centred to the east of New Zealand directing an east to northeasterly airflow over the country.
North Island
Expect cloud in the east and for the upper North Island with easterly winds, winds north of the Waikato will be quite blustery. Occasional showers also north of Mahia Peninsula and north of the Waikato. From afternoon some rain may start to move into northern parts of Northland. Out west skies are sunnier, winds lighter and temperatures warmer, there will be some high cloud though.
South Island
Mostly sunny weather however expect some high cloud, just the far south may have completely sunny skies. Any coastal morning cloud in the east south of Banks Peninsula breaks away. Expect northeasterly winds for all, lighter inland, a bit fresher for coastal parts in the east and across the Canterbury Plains.
