The Winter Solstice has arrived!

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The Winter Solstice is when the sun’s apparent position in our sky reaches its northern most point – giving us our longest night of the year (Overnight Tuesday) and our shortest day (Wednesday).

As of Thursday the days will start to get longer again…although don’t expect any noticeable difference for two or three more weeks.

The solstice occurred at 5:16am NZT Wednesday but on many calendars it will be highlighted as June 21st – this is because it will be 5:16pm UTC (Greenwich Mean Time).
