The first day of summer – The Big Picture on Tuesday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The first official day of summer is here – and it’s looking like a mixed kind of a day around the country.

We have an increasing northerly quarter airflow over New Zealand, while within this flow we have a warm front pushing down onto the West Coast of the South Island.

For the most part, the North Island can expect a fairly cloudy day – but a few sunny areas break through in the afternoon from Waikato northwards, while any early showers clear.
Further south, some early morning rain eases to the odd shower or drizzle patch with dry spells in the mix.

For the South Island, it’s becoming cloudy in the morning on the West Coast, with some rain from afternoon possibly turning heavy.
Mainly dry in the east with some high cloud here and there, while early low cloud clears.
There’s also the odd spot of rain possible from afternoon about North Canterbury and Marlborough (Marlborough more so early morning).
