As you can see on the map below clearly temperatures are warmer than normal for most regions around New Zealand today, this is especially true for the eastern South Island. Temperatures in the high teens or lows twenties for most parts of the country today.
A northerly airflow picks up over the South Island tonight leading to warmer than normal overnight lows. The North Island still has some ridging leading to settled conditions and mainly clear skies, naturally cool temperatures will result as can be seen about the eastern North Island and about inland Bay Of Plenty.
