Anticyclonic conditions tonight and areas of cloud cover bring mostly average overnight lows for most, just about the far south of the South Island it may feel a little chilly but still not all that bad.
New Years Eve sees a dry and warm day for most, a few coastal spots where a sea breeze pops up in the afternoon may not feel all that hot though, coastal Canterbury being a good example of this with a breezy east to northeast wind. But do not fear, for the revellers who go late into the night about Canterbury it should be a warmer then average night ahead as ENE winds drop away to be replaced by a lighter northerly. The North Island sees average overnight lows for most to bring in the new year.
