An onshore airflow brings cool temperatures to the eastern South Island today, the West Coast see a warmer than average day. Average to above average temperatures for the North Island than would otherwise be expected at this time of year.
A ridge brings cold overnight temperatures for the South Island tonight, perhaps dipping down to -2 about parts of Central Otago by dawn on Saturday. A low pressure system centred to the northwest drags a northeasterly airflow over the North Island, cloudy skies in the east means temperatures don’t cool down. Slightly clearer skies to the west in spots brings average to slightly cooler than average overnight lows. Overnight lows for Northland should pick up around dawn on Saturday as an area of showers rotates onto the far north out of the aforementioned low.
