SURFACE/FLASH FLOOD WARNING

A pool of very unstable air is currently lying over Auckland and Northland.  It is producing some extremely heavy downpours prompting TRN’s Weather Watch Centre to issue flash and surface flood warnings for Auckland city and for all areas northwards to Cape Reinga.

“Rainfall rates are so heavy roads are being affected by surface flooding.  Flash flooding in small creeks and drains is also to be expected and the fast moving water can be deadly” says head weather analyst Philip Duncan.  The heavy downpours are likely to remain all afternoon but should ease this evening.

“Motorists should put their headlights on now and be prepared for instant zero visibility conditions”.  He says those driving on motorways should take most care as there is less area for the water drain off.  “Tonight might be a very slow commute home for Aucklanders”.

Duncan says while the school kids will be drenched walking home this afternoon at least the gardens will be loving it.
