Sunday’s national forecast – SW airflow

A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, a few cold fronts in this flow push northwards over New Zealand during the day.

North Island

Morning rain in the northeast (eastern Northland down through to Bay Of Plenty and East Cape, rain may be heavy then clearing this afternoon with sun breaking through. Partly cloudy in the west with a few showers, northwesterlies tend southwest this evening. Dry and mostly sunny in the east although expect some high cloud, some scattered rain Mahia Peninsula northwards clears up in the afternoon. Gusty north to northwesterly winds for Wellington, partly cloudy skies with the odd spit or shower especially in the north, around midnight southerlies develop with showers.

South Island

Cloudy along the West Coast with showers or areas of rain, heavy rain for South Westland eases this afternoon. Nelson and Marlborough have a dry and mostly sunny day, northwesterly winds change southerly this evening. Showers for the far south clear overnight but remain for coastal Southland. Mostly sunny in the east, a southerly change moves through Canterbury this afternoon bringing showers, showers may be heavy south of Banks Peninsula especially inland with a chance of thunder.
