A strong westerly airflow lies over New Zealand today, another front passes over the South Island during the day then the North Island this evening. Expect heavy rain in the west of the South Island, the odd shower in the east. Showers mainly move into the North Island this evening.  Winds will again be strong to gale in the east – and if you live in the Deep South – a warning, winter returns again tonight as a southerly arrives.

Auckland & Northland
Cloudy spells with the odd sunny break at times, cloud thickens from late afternoon or then a few showers overnight with a cooler sou’west change behind.
Highs: 17

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Cloudy spells, thickening during the afternoon. A few showers move in during the evening then clear at night. West to northwest breezes, may be gusty for a time in exposed areas.
Highs: 13-17

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some high cloud at times, mainly about the Wairarapa. Expect gusty northwesterly winds during the day, strong to gale force about Wairarapa.
High: 18-20

Western North Island
Becoming cloudy in the morning with some rain or showers developing later. Gusty westerlies.
Highs: 14-15

Wellington
Strong to gale northerly winds. Sunny and cloudy periods but a period of showers possible.
Highs: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Strong northwesterlies, some scattered rain, mainly in the west. Gusty nor’westers, possibly gale.  Turning more west to south west later. Highs: 15-17

Canterbury
Mostly sunny with gusty west to northwest winds, a few spots of morning rain possible otherwise dry
High: 15 to 17

West Coast
Heavy rain at times with gusty westerlies – colderm south westerlies late in the day.
High: 13 or 14

Coastal Otago
Sunny spells, gusty westerlies develop in the morning with some brief rain possible .
High: 11

Southland & Central Otago
Cloud at times with the odd shower and gusty westerlies. Later a cold wintry southerly arrives with snow on the ranges.
High: 10

Showery in Invercargill with hail, NW wind. Thunder has been heard most of the morning. You might need to have a re look at your Southland forecast.
