Today a brief but intense low pressure system moves away to the east of the North Island bringing a clearance in the weather. For the South Island a northwesterly airflow builds with rain in the west and drier warmer weather out east.

For the North Island today morning rain or showers clear for most areas then expect sunny spells increasing, winds from the west, tending northwest about the lower North Island. Northwesterlies about Wellington will be strong especially from afternoon. High’s today sitting in the high teens for most, mid teens about the lower North Island.

In the South Island expect rain on the West Coast and drier warmer weather out east, some high cloud out east also. Southland can expect rain for much of the day with strong west to southwest winds. Around mid to late morning a period of showers moves into much of Otago then easing in the afternoon especially about the coast. Mid to late afternoon a southwest change flicks through Canterbury and may deliver a few showers.

Temperatures for the South Island range from the low double figure mark in the far south through to the high teens for north-eastern parts of the Island.
