A ridge is mostly in control of the weather today although a slight squeeze is starting to get put on in the South Island by a front approaching in the Tasman Sea, therefore warm weather can be expected out east in both islands today and tomorrow.

Upper North Island

Expect high cloud today with northeasterly breezes, tending more northwest about Gisborne in the afternoon. Cloud thickening and lowering after dark north of the Waikato.
HIGHS: 22-24, 28 in Gisborne

Lower North Island

Mostly sunny weather with north to northeasterly breezes a bit brisk about Wellington, winds tend a little more westerly between southern Taranaki and Kapiti. Some high cloud developing from late afternoon or evening.
HIGHS: 20-22, 24-25 on the east coast.

Upper South Island

A mix of sun and cloud on the West Coast north of Hokitika with light northerly breezes. Mostly sunny in Nelson with northerlies picking up a bit in the afternoon, perhaps some cloud at times after midday then high cloud after dark. Sunny and warm along the east coast from Marlborough to Canterbury with hot temperatures after any morning cloud clears, mainly in Canterbury. Winds mostly light however northerlies a bit breezy about Marlborough. In the evening northwesterly winds push through to the coast in Canterbury. About Timaru expect easterly breezes finally easing off in the evening, morning cloud clears to a sunny day.
HIGHS: 20 on the West Coast, 23 in Nelson. 28-30 in Canterbury and Marlborough.

Lower South Island

Increasing cloud during the day south of Hokitika, a few showers in Fiordland from morning turning to rain in the evening. Heavy falls overnight. Northeasterly breezes increase during the day also and may reach gale force along the Fiordland coastline later in the evening. Mostly sunny in Southland and Otago with increasing high cloud, light winds near the coast and northwesterly breezes inland. Northwesterlies pick up everywhere in the evening and spread to the coast.
