Sunday’s national forecast

> From the WeatherWatch archives

High pressure remains over New Zealand but the forecast shows some big daytime downpours are expected through the interior of both islands, especially the Central Plateau area in the North Island this afternoon and/or early evening.

NORTH ISLAND:
Light winds with sea breezes today – and a light easterly around Northland and Auckland. Fairly cloudy for many regions, especially inland where afternoon cloud build ups will produce downpours inland around Central Plateau and the Hawke’s Bay Ranges down towards the Tararua Ranges. These downpours, while isolated, will be heavy with possible hail and thunder. Elsewhere mostly dry.
Highs: 18 to 23 (not so hot with more cloud cover today)

SOUTH ISLAND:
Light winds with sea breezes. Clouds increasing inland with downpours developing in the afternoon around some interior ranges/mountains from Canterbury to Otago. Dry elsewhere. Warm inland.
Highs: 18 to 25
