Summer temperatures have rocketed across the South Island today as a nor’wester kicks into gear, with Timaru reaching a staggering 27 degrees this hour.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says the temperatures are out of season. “Spring has only just started and to many scientists it is still technically considered winter for another week or so but temperatures today, right across New Zealand, are painting a completely different picture”.
Mr Duncan says Oamaru is just one degree behind on 26 degrees with Dunedin on 24. Blenheim has 23 degrees while Christchurch and Queenstown have 22. Gisborne is on 21 with Kaikohe, Hastings, Akaroa and Wanaka all on 20.
Auckland and Timaru both have 19 and are tipped to reach 20 this afternoon.
“Today’s daily highs may have some record breakers in it” says Mr Duncan.
WeatherWatch.co.nz is asking readers to send in their temperature readings across Canterbury today with the possibility that some areas may unofficially reach 30 degrees.

It has been 22 degrees in Christchurch since 10am this morning and we have yet to see any blue sky. The cloud is more low than high in fact and the top of the port hills is hazy. The northwest wind is so warm! I cannot remember it ever feeling so warm in a very long time. Im sure if the sun was even half out temps would be in the high 20’s and if we got a sunny spell in the next hour we would push 30 im sure!
