This evening/overnight a sub tropical low is centred just northwest offshore from the North Island, meanwhile an anticyclone lies southeast of the South Island. In between these systems is a squash zone of sorts and with this type of situation you can end up having strong winds in certain areas. The winds this time are strongest closer to the low and will affect mainly the upper North Island overnight, particularly in the east.
A rain band will be associated with this low pressure system and will once again mainly affect the upper North Island tonight, particularly in the east where some falls could be heavy. Currently (5pm) this band of rain lies over Northland and should move into Auckland during the evening.
