WeatherWatch.co.nz says the front is now moving into Canterbury and up the West Coast and will hit the lower North Island after midnight.
In the North Island near gale force winds are hitting New Plymouth and inland Hawkes Bay. Gales are also affecting the Manukau Heads, 15kms west of Auckland Airport, however conditions are much calmer in Auckland city.
This afternoon damaging gale force winds gusting to 110km/h hit the city but as of 10:30pm winds were fairly light, reaching only 48km/h in gusts.
