Storm claims life, others missing

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Severe gales across northern New Zealand overnight have resulted in the death of a 15 year old girl, as a tree fell on a caravan in Whakapara, northwest of Whangarei.

Strong southeasterly winds gusting well in excess of 100 kph in exposed eastern areas of Northland, brought with it driving rain although most populated areas escaped the severity of the winds.

Three people have been reported missing in the Mangamuka forest as they didn’t return home on Friday night.
Atrocious conditions have made it difficult for searchers to fine the missing trio, including 2 children.

Power cuts and trees uprooted occurred during the height of the storm however the wind and rain is expected to ease slowly throughout the day.

Auckland city saw the winds pick up overnight but not to a severe degree and although rain fell, it wasn’t particularly heavy for the most part.
