5:30 Update

Temperatures have continued to rise in a number of areas of the past hour but we now believe almost all would have reached their peak by now.

Thank you all so much for your contributions today – it’s amazing how much hotter it can be in your backyard than out at an airport!  Keep the comments coming, we’ll continue to publish them into the evening.

However, this is the final update for hourly temperatures – but check back to WeatherWatch.co.nz at 6:30pm for our final run down on today’s hot temps, gales and humidex readings.

Those temp/humidity readings from the Hansen site here in Whangarei have to be wrong, way too high suggesting the temp/humidity sensor is located incorrectly, the 30 day trend on temp is way off, got to be in the sun, the rest of the site is pretty good with its info.

My station was in agreement with your official one and most of the other locals who supplied info, for both temp & humidity, I usually ignore the airport readings as it is several Kms from Whangarei, but lately with the very settled conditions, we have been seeing similar results at both airport and city.

It’s not easy with home stations to comply with the location criteria so I guess we have to do the best we can and go with what we see allowing for the errors generated by home conditions.
Most of us cannot install weather apparatus as per NIWA guidelines so we enjoy what we do have.

All good stuff really and great to see so many people interested.

Lots of nonsense readings among the good ones. Situation normal.

I’ve been following the recent forecasts in NZ from Barry in South Wales UK. It’s been 34 years since I spent a year there on a working holiday and the temperatures, at times were quite similar to the present, I almost feel homesick. The temperature here lastnight was minus 6 and this morning is not much higher.
