WeatherWatch.co.nz

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A band of thunderstorms and heavy showers that developed over the Mamaku Ranges this afternoon have moved into the South Waikato but are now easing as they head north west towards the Tasman Sea.

In the past hour 900 lightning strikes have been recorded by the lightning detector at www.weatherwatch.co.nz  with a total of around 2600 so far today.

Heavy showers may affect State Highway 1 between Hamilton and the Bombay Hills for another hour or so.

You can monitor the movement of these thunderstorms by checking out our free lightning detector to the right of this story.

That was one very sudden scary storm, never seen anything gather so quickly, the wind in Hamilton was full on, I thought a big tornado was coming.

We could see it gathering around the hills – Maungakawa,Te Miro, here in Cambridge. The wind got very strong and gusty here, from the east, quite scary, Lots of thunder in the distance. No rain or electrical storm,in Leamington, anyway.
