Snow has closed the Desert Road in the central North Island.
WeatherWatch.co.nz earlier predicted the chance of snow on the Desert Road late last week, as a colder southerly change moved in.
About 5-10cm of snow was expected to settle above 900m on the Desert Road on Tuesday night, with a further 2-4cm expected above 700m this morning.
The New Zealand Transport Agency is also advising drivers that chains are essential on State Highway 73 through Arthur’s Pass due to snow.
Drivers are also asked to take care on SH8 from Twizel to Fairlie.
Meanwhile, SH94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound has been closed as a result of rockfalls and a section of SH1 between Clinton and Gore is closed because of a washout.

The closure of SH1 between Gore and Clinton began on the 5th July – nothing to do with the current weather system.
