Shock & Awe – Lightning strike sets fire to hedge in New Zealand’s southern most region

> From the WeatherWatch archives

New Zealand’s surge of dramatic thunderstorms continues with a hedge in water logged Southland bursting into flames following a dramatic lightning strike this evening.

Farmer Bart Luijten tweeted @WeatherWatchNZ on Twitter a short time ago “Hedge on fire struck by lightning in southland in very heavy rain as well”.

New Zealand has been hit by thousands of thunderstorms in recent days, killing livestock in Waikato in the north of the country and bringing flooding and numerous cloud to ground lightning strikes in New Zealand’s closest region to Antarctica, Southland.
