Newstalk ZB has confirmed that a man and his horse have been killed after being struck by lightning near Dargaville.   TRN’s head weather analyst Philip Duncan is urging residents across northern New Zealand to take extreme care this afternoon as widespread thunderstorms continue.   “The thunderstorms near Dargaville were severe but have tapered off now.  However isolated lightning strikes are still being recorded with around 160 in the last hour”.

Torrential rain has eased in Auckland and is now moving into the Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty regions.  “This rain is easily heavy enough to cause surface and flash flooding.  This weather event is extremely dangerous and motorists and the general public north of about Taupo should be on high alert for the remainder of today”.

Duncan says slips and flooding are very likely across Coromandel with “exceptionally” heavy rain moving in to the area.

Elsewhere and heavy rain has been reported in Taupo, Wanganui and Blenheim.
