Severe weather threat update

> From the WeatherWatch archives

It could be a bit of rough go at times this weekend.  A complex frontal system will bring a variety of weather to the Mainland this weekend.

Heavy rain warnings, issued by government forecaster MetService, have been posted the ranges of Westland south Otira.  The best chance for heavy rain looks like it will be tonight into tomorrow.  100 to 150mm of rain may fall between this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon.

Rain with some heavy falls is possible about the Canterbury headwaters from this evening through tomorrow afternoon.  MetService feels that rainfall totals may approach warning criteria.

Wind could also be an issue this weekend.  Northwest winds are expected to increase tonight about central New Zealand and the eastern regions of the South Island.  Gale force winds are likely and severe gales are possible on Sunday.  MetService has issued a watch for these areas.
