A large area of severe thunderstorms has developed over central Northland and will this afternoon spread into the Auckland region. MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm watch and are advising listeners to check their website for details. www.metservice.co.nz
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says people should stay indoors and switch off electrical appliances once they hear thunder. “Storms like this can be fatal so people must stay indoors”.
A band of heavy rain is drenching the upper North Island from Taupo northwards. “Even if you don’t receive a thunderstorm today very heavy downpours are expected right across northern New Zealand. Flash and surface flooding is highly likely in these regions and motorists and the general public need to be on high alert”.
Duncan says the rain will “almost certainly” bring Waikato’s drought to an end.
