Severe gale warnings issued for lower North Island

> From the WeatherWatch archives

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Wairapapa, Wellington and Marlborough regions as strong northerly gales are expected overnight.

A front and an associated low are forecast to cross central New Zealand tonight, bringing northerly gales to the area.

The strongest winds are expected about the Marlborough Sounds, Wellington and southern parts of Wairarapa between 10pm tonight and 4am tomorrow, when severe gale gusts of 120 km/h are likely in exposed places.

MetService says winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees, powerlines and insecure structures and make driving hazardous, especially for high sided vehicles and motorcycles.

At this stage just a cold front moving through overnight Sunday/Monday morning.  No snow predicted in the town – hail is a possibility.  Mostly just a cold wind change.

Whats the difference between a strong gale and a standard gale, either is simply a gale or its simply strong.
