A large high is in control of New Zealand’s weather for the next few days bringing mainly settled, sunny, weather. Light winds means some heavier frosts tonight, especially through the South Island interior.
However by Friday evening and into the weekend mild sub-tropical northerly quarter winds develop, becoming strong and may be even gale force by Sunday. There may be both wind and rain warnings issued this Sunday and Monday due to the strong winds and slow moving heavy rain bands.
The nor’east flow remains over New Zealand until early next week, when it tilts more nor’west bringing more fairly mild weather.
