TROPICAL CYCLONE DOVI – THE WHAT, WHEN AND WHERE
Tropical Cyclone Dovi is now just to our northwest in the Tasman Sea and looks track down and over New Zealand this weekend, by the time it moves over the New Zealand on Sunday (the North Island to be more specific) it will be an “Ex” Tropical Cyclone.
Heavy rain is likely about central New Zealand today, the lower North Island and upper South Island. The Winds really ramp up on Sunday as this low pressure system crosses over the North Island, expect very strong to gale southerlies for the lower North Island and strong to gale northerly quarter winds for the upper North Island, southerlies spread northwards in the evening. Please keep up to date with the latest weather warnings from Metservice regarding this storm.
HUMIDITY FINALLY SET TO EASE
Once the low that was Ex Tropical Cyclone Dovi passes out to our east on Monday the humidity levels across the North Island will finally ease, they do start to ease from Sunday but Monday is when it will be more noticeable.
In the image / graph below for Auckland you’ll notice the dew point temperature (green line) starting to drop away from Sunday. Anything above a 20 degree dew point feels very humid, dew points of around 23 to 24 degrees is like being in Fiji which the upper North Island will experience today. You can find the below graph by clicking here then click on the “Fog/Cloud” tab.
NEXT WEEK IS LOOKING SETTLED
Apart from clearing showers for the North Island during Monday and Tuesday, next week is looking mainly settled with high pressure moving in.

I’m really amazed there is nothing about Chch flooding on the news. I live at the top of Belfast and we are usually pretty sweet here, but the last 12 hours has been intense to say the least. I look at the graphs and it seems to be 4mm every hour at least, and for the next 6 hours or so. Am surprised there is nowhere on line talking about it. hate to think what people might be going through in bexley, st albans, heathcote.

I mean it’s still going strong 10 hours after I wrote this and I only got a few hours sleep still quite worried in general, leaks I never knew about around the property and our proximity to the Waimakariri river. In the 15 years I have lived in this house, have never been worried about that river flooding us before, til this weather event. I hate facebook but I hope there can be an alternative for weather events.
