Saturday’s national forecast – Warm then cold

A few fronts are marching northwards over the country today with rain likely for western regions and in the far south, showers with a chance of thunderstorms for Canterbury this afternoon with a cold southwest change.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Some sun then cloud thickens, showers develop mid to late afternoon, turning to rain in the evening as a front moves in. Rain start easing from overnight as northwesterlies change southwest.
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers develop in the morning, turning to rain by midday, heavy falls possible for Taranaki then easing in the evening. Blustery northwesterlies ease in the afternoon, perhaps tending a little more westerly.
Highs: 10-16

Eastern North Island

High cloud, spots of rain develop about Wairarapa in the morning, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may see a spot of rain in the afternoon. Sun may break through before dusk. Northwesterly winds.
High: 16-19

Wellington

Showers turn to rain in the morning, easing then clearing in the afternoon with strong northwesterlies (gales through Cook Strait) starting to ease also.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain clears, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon with blustery northwesterlies easing. Winds tend southwest in the afternoon for Nelson.
Highs: 16-19

Canterbury

Chance early spot of rain then mostly sunny with northwesterlies, winds change southerly mid to late afternoon bringing showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then clearing overnight.
Highs: 15-21

West Coast

Rain, easing to showers in the evening as westerlies tend more southwest.
Highs: 11-15

Southland & Otago
Rain develops in the morning, easing to showers in the afternoon with west to southwesterly winds strengthening, gales develop about the coast. Drying out in the evening for Otago. Snow lowers to 400m in the afternoon for Southland.
Highs: 9-14
