A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today while a high pressure system builds in the Tasman Sea. Expect showers for the west of the North Island, morning rain clears out east. Showers affect the south of the South Island and work their way up the east coast during the day.

Auckland & Northland
Showers now and then with gusty cool west to southwest winds. A few brief sunny spells may sneak through now and then.
Highs: 14-15

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Morning rain then the odd shower with brisk west to southwest winds. After rain clears about the Bay Of Plenty in the morning conditions will be mainly dry with sunny weather developing.
Highs: 12-16

Eastern North Island
Morning rain with northerly winds, a west to southwest change around midday with rain clearing and sunny spells increasing.
High: 15-16

Western North Island
Rain eases to showers early morning, brisk westerly winds tending more southwest about northern Taranaki. A few sunny spells may sneak through at times.
Highs: 12-13

Wellington
Early rain clears then expect sunny spells with southerly breezes. Later in the evening or around midnight showers move in again with southerlies increasing.
Highs: 12-13

Nelson
Sunny with light winds at first, southwesterlies freshen up in the afternoon then ease again at night.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough
Sunny with some cloud, light southwesterlies. A brief shower may move through in the evening.
High: 14

Canterbury
Sunny with light winds, a cold southwest change late afternoon brings showers with a risk of hail. The odd snow flurry falls to 600m with the change then lowers to 400m at night. Showers are more likely to be coastal with only the odd brief shower or snow flurry to the levels mentioned above in inland areas.

West Coast
Morning showers clear then expect sunny spells with southwesterly breezes.
Highs: 10-11

Coastal Otago
Morning sunny spells with light winds, late morning gusty west to southwest winds develop with showers and some small hail. Snow flurries at times to 400m from midday lowering to 200m later in the evening. Areas of precipitation clear overnight.
Highs: 8-9

Central Otago
Cloudy spells with westerly winds tending more southwest in the afternoon. Chance of a brief shower from midday onwards then clearing at night. If there are any showers about the will be the odd snow flurry to 600m around midday lowering to 300m in the evening then clearing.
High: 9

Southland
Showers with cold gusty southwesterly winds, some small hail at times too. Snow flurries to 400m in the morning lower to 200m in the evening. Around midnight showery conditions ease a fair bit potentially clearing.
High: 7-8
