A low pressure system deepens east of the North Island today while the South Island lies under a ridge of high pressure before a very cold frontal system attacks the far south later in the evening.

Northland
A mix of sunny and cloudy spells with light southwest breezes which pick up overnight. The odd isolated shower at times especially in the west.
Highs: 13-14

Auckland & Waikato
Cloudy periods with showers at times, more likely about Auckland. Dry spells too, more frequent about the Waikato. Easterly winds tend southwest later in the afternoon.
High: 13

Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy periods and the odd sunny spell, sunny spells more likely in the morning. Light southeasterlies. In the evening winds tend more southerly and there could be a few showers develop.
High: 14

Central North Island
Cloudy spells with the odd sunny break at times, showers may move in overnight with light winds tending more southerly.
Highs: 8-10

Eastern North Island
Showers with easterly breezes, rain later in the evening could become heavy as southerly winds increase.
High: 12

Western North Island
Cloudy spells with the odd sunny break at times, light winds from the southerly quarter. There could be showers develop overnight.
Highs: 12-14

Wellington
Early showers clear then expect cloudy periods for the rest of the day, may still be the odd shower at times otherwise fairly dry. Light winds.
High: 12-13

Nelson
A few morning showers clear then expect cloudy spells with the odd sunny break in the afternoon. Light winds from the southerly quarter.
Highs: 12-13

Marlborough
Early rain eases to the odd shower with cloudy spells, winds light from the southeast. Could be a few late sunny breaks make their way through just before evening.
Highs: 11-12

Canterbury
Cloudy for Mid and North Canterbury in the morning with areas of drizzle or patchy rain, winds tend southerly. Then clearing around midday with sunny spells developing into the afternoon. For South Canterbury expect mostly sunny skies with some morning cloud clearing. Overnight a cold southwest change develops bringing wintry showers and snow flurries to 300m for most.

West Coast
Sunny with light southeasterlies about Buller, southwest winds further south. Some high cloud about North Westland decreases during the afternoon. Some general cloud increases about South Westland in the evening then clears overnight.
High: 13-14

Coastal Otago
Sunny with light winds tending northeast, some high cloud later in the evening. Overnight a cold southwest change develops bringing wintry showers and snow flurries to 300m.
High: 11-12

Central Otago
Sunny with light winds tending westerly, some high cloud towards evening. At night a cold southwest change develops bringing wintry showers and snow to low levels.
Highs: 5-6

Southland
Mainly sunny with some high cloud at times, thickening a little in the afternoon with northwest breezes. In the evening winds change cold southwest with wintry showers and snow flurries to 400m then lowering to low levels at night.
High: 11-12
