Saturday’s national forecast

> From the WeatherWatch archives

After one of the worst severe weather outbreaks in years, the North Island will get a well deserved break from the thunderstorms today.

A few afternoon showers are possible for Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.  Otherwise, look for a dry day for the North Island.  There should still be a fair amount of clouds, but there will also be plenty of sunshine.  Daytime highs should be in the low to mid 20’s.

For the South Island, another quiet day is expected for most areas.  The deep south will likely see spotty showers today.  The rest of the island will be dry and settled.  Highs will be in the lower teens in the coastal sections of the deep south to the upper teens inland.  The central and northern sections will see more sunshine and highs should be in the low to middle 20s.

The strangest thing just happened! The day is lovely, blue sky and a few scattered puffy clouds, hardly a breathe of wind. I have spent the morning trimming hedges and has just raked all the mess into a couple of piles down the drive. I went inside to get something and was on my way back to the open door when I heard the tree outside getting blown about like it was being hit by a large amount of wind. I was at the door by this stage and the leaves of the Magnolia and at the mess that I had just cleaned up were being thrown everywhere in a circular motion. It was over just as fast as it started and by the time I went to the other side of the house to see if it as still going, it was gone!!!!! Blue sky, puffy clouds and hardly a breathe of wind! Other than the mess it throw around and the fact that my husband witnessed it, no one would have believed me

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for getting in touch . Yes sometimes these circulation movements can whiz through and cause more of a disturbance than damage however if it’s intense enough they can pack a bit of a punch and we believe you as well!

Thanks

WW
