A northwesterly airflow builds over the country today with a front moving onto the lower South Island this evening then pushing northwards overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly sunny for Northland, Auckland and the Bay Of Plenty with high cloud from afternoon. The Waikato sees more frequent areas of cloud with the risk of a shower at times. Light northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, especially about Taranaki and Kapiti. Overnight rain moves in, or perhaps around dawn on Sunday. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-16

Eastern North Island
A mainly sunny day, some high cloud mainly later. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-19

Wellington
Morning sun then expect increasing cloud, breezy north to northwesterly winds.
High: 15

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny, some high cloud later in the day for Marlborough. Nelson sees some morning sun then cloud increases from afternoon, evening scattered rain becoming heavy overnight. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-17

Canterbury
Mostly sunny, patchy rain about the high country starts to become heavy in the evening. Overnight rain spreads to most areas. Increasing north to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 15-17

West Coast
Cloudy, expect patchy rain or showers. Rain about South Westland becomes heavy towards midday then becoming heavy about North Westland late afternoon / evening. Increasing northerly winds.
Highs: 13-14

Southland & Otago
Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, some evening rain develops in the west then spreads to the east coast overnight. North to northeasterly winds becoming light overnight.
Highs: 11-13
