Rimutaka highway opens but Desert road closes

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The Rimutaka Hill Road (SH2) between Upper Hutt and the Wairarapa was closed early Tuesday evening after heavy snow started to fall, however was reopened again shortly before 7pm.

Snow was earlier reported in the Wellington suburb of Karori.

As predicted by WeatherWatch.co.nz snow and ice has closed the Desert road tonight.  It’s likely to reopen again on Wednesday morning as skies clear.

Well, here in Karori it’s been sleeting and hailing all evening. Up here on the hill earlier this evening you could tell it was snowing not much higher up.

Hail seems to be the item of the evening here – and gusty winds of course!

hopefully Auckland will get snow this year after 70 years or so no snow. Would be quite weird for Aucklanders waking up to a white Auckland and going to work!
