Poll Results: Kiwis have very mixed reactions to when they consider winter over

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The recent poll we ran at WeatherWatch.co.nz offered four different end dates to winter and New Zealanders have voted in perhaps surprising ways.

The majority and most popular answered certainly surprised us – most of you consider winter is over once Mother Nature makes a change. A big 40% said winter is over when Mother Nature says so, or in other words, once buds and flowers start blooming, temperatures begin lifting and nature shows real signs of new life, such as lambs and calves, birds and pollen.

In second place was the astronomical date – which means 31% of you still go with now being winter and that the winter season doesn’t end for another three weeks, at the Spring Equinox (the point in time when our days become longer than nights again).

Third place was the date we just passed – the meteorological date (the last day of August).

Fascinating results – and you can read more about the 4 different end dates to winter here.

Next poll out on Monday!
