Weak low pressure falling apart over northern NZ along with daytime heating produced some heavy downpours on Sunday around Auckland.
Instability caused by the conditions helped produce this funnel cloud (or more than one).
If a funnel cloud touches the surface of the planet it becomes a tornado over land or a waterspout over water. In this case it was a harmless funnel cloud in the sky as, based on these photos, it didn’t touch the ground.
