Recently we looked at the dullest, dampest, coolest and windiest city and votes came in for centres across both the North and South Islands and today we thought we’d ask for your most bleak spot anywhere in the country.
It could be a town or a region but what area makes you think it’s pretty miserable there from time to time and we’d like to know why you think that’s the case.
It might be somewhere where you went for your holidays and often the weather turned sour or a place that you lived in or currently live in and notice the frequent dismal days.
In case you missed it, Invercargill, Dunedin and Palmerston North were the 3 cities that got many votes with Auckland hot on the heels of those centres.
Please let us know your thoughts and we’ll publish them as soon as we can.

Auckland, look at this month, almost all SW direction and boring partly cloudy and Gale force winds,Can put up with the rain, humidity and cold but not this dreary wind day after day, beginning to think autumn and winter is looking better now.

Try spending the same period down in the King Country. You would get all the rain events and a lot more cloud.

The Sth Island east coast from Christchurch southwards isnt flash.
Long spells of easterly crap, Plus the ENE sea breeze can really ruin a nice day.

Just having one of your less good years, a far cry from the likes of 2003. Colder, duller and more persistently easterly/southerly regimes have certainly occurred in the past – probbaly one of the worst was from December 1937 to November 1938, with 895mm rainfall in Ch’ch and only 1758 hours of sun at the Gardens site. Down at Waimate it was worse, with only 1562 hours (and only 1488 for the calendar year 1937).
During this same period there was a lot of dry sunny weather in Central Otago and the Lakes, with 2343 hours at Alexandra in 1938, easily its highest total.

There is a spot between Stratford and Hawera that is always cloudy and rains more often than not. Not sure which town the area is within but there is just farmland there.

If it is – then it’s drier than Stratford. Rainfall increases steadily as you travel north on that road until it reaches a peak at about Midhirst.

Waikanae. 95% of the time it’s raining and windy or overcast and windy.. Bit like right now..Lots of rain and strong winds. Only had 3 weeks of sunshine all up, all last summer.
