NZ – Warm, then windy, then colder + Storm exits Australia

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Mid-spring means there’s a lot of action with our weather. For NZ warm northerlies are going to kick in over the coming days, pushing temperatures in the east above 8 degrees over normal. (although in spring it is normal to have these fluctuations!).

But the warm weather in NZ is ahead of a cold change arriving this weekend – and a low that will form around the North Island bringing some further rain. In Australia a storm in the south east continues to hammer Victoria with heavy rain – and another 100mm is coming today.

Gale southerlies are also about to kick in along the eastern side of Tasmania up to the south-eastern corner of Victoria.

We have your full NZ and Australia forecast through to Monday next week.

Are there any stats to show that NZ is windier than it used to be, or that the pressure is both lower and far more variable? Seems like it is windier in Auckland and far fewer high pressures lasting any time compared to a decade ago?

Hi Andy, data in NZ is hard to find as Government Agencies Niwa and MetService have commercialised it and therefore limited access to it. But in Auckland it’s worth noting last year was La Nina and so lacked the westerlies…and the 5 years prior we had a significant rainfall deficit in Auckland and a big uptick in more high pressure. So the weather over the past 2 months has been a return to what is considered a ‘closer to normal’ pattern for Auckland.
