Don’t believe the Wairoa 40.1. Even in the exceptional conditions of 7 Feb 1973, the top North Island temp. was 39.2C at Ruatoria.

Wouldn’t mind knowing where the station is located…if it’s in town and around buildings and streets then it’s quite possible.   Also, Wairoa is surrounded by hills, unlike Napier/Hastings, so a small micro climate could, in my view, lift the temperature within the town by 2 or 3 degrees over Napier/Hastings, but I doubt it was 40.1 degrees if it was placed in an official weather station out over a farm for eg.

I think Ruatoria might be more of a village than a town and the station was on a rural/urban site on south side. Niwa recorded a max of 37.3C for Wairoa yesterday (Sunday).

Was talking about Wairoa, not Ruatoria!

Sorry, misinterpreted that. Yes, it would be interesting to know roughly where and just how that private Wairoa ‘weather-station’ is sited. Niwa’s Wairoa station is just north of the main-centre.

Its been a funny day in Christchurch with quite thick high cloud this morning yet still reaching 30 and 32 in some suburbs. Then the southerly came and skies cleared its still stayed in the 20’s for quite some time with a very strong southerly now. No sign of any rain i dont think we will get any going by the radar thats already moved north of the city couple hours ago. Couple of branches have fallen off the trees now at the backyard. I see that Wairoa weather station in the Hawkes Bay is showing current temperature of 40.1 degrees. Its a weather underground one. I wonder if thats accurate because if it is it should probably get a mention. Very dry down here in Christchurch now the only green on the grass is the weeds lol.

By 10am this morning it was so hot that my body could not take the heat & I got a blood nose as a result of the heat. Been drinking heaps of water at least my kidneys are getting a clean out. lol
Had to put the dog & cat under the shower they were both so hot. But not at the same time.
