NORTH ISLAND:

• AM – New Year’s day is likely to begin with showers and patchy rain around parts of Wellington, Manawatu-Wanganui, Taranaki and Waikato, due to the remnants of the cold front. Drizzle and dry spells too.
• PM – During the Afternoon showers are likely in the North Island mainly across interior areas and Northland. Some may be accompanied by thunderstorms due to daytime heating. 

SOUTH ISLAND:

• Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland will be mostly sunny on New Year’s day, while showery rain is likely to remain on the West Coast and Tasman areas.
